My ALA Schedule

Here’s an overview of where I think I’ll be over the course of ALA week. I usually end up skipping out on a few of the sessions I plan to attend, because I overschedule and get burned out. But there’s a lot of good stuff this year (most of it at the same time, *grumble*), so my Exhibit Hall time may be severely curtailed from the year before last… (I haven’t looked at the list of authors, but gosh darn it, I want to meet Neil Gaiman if he’s there. I’ll wait in line and miss sessions if I have to. Except the one I paid for. And SummonCamp, which I promised my department head I’d attend, if he doesn’t. And the NMRT Board Meeting, because, you know, it’s my first one, and that makes me feel all awesome and not like a “baby librarian” [MPOW inside joke, there].)

6/21
Arrive in NO early in the morning. Crash at hotel through the hot part of the day.
6/22-6/23
Explore (Let me know if you’re in town early and want to get together! I want to do voodoo tours and explore the French Quarter. And eat beignets, whatever those are [nah, it’s cool, I have Google and a rough idea]. And get gumbo. And get an alcoholic slushy to carry down the street with me–ideally with friends, because alcoholic slushies are definitely better with company. I also hear there’s an aquarium and would be up for that.)
6/24
9am-4:30pm: User Experience Design for Websites (preconference)
4pm-5:15pm: Opening Session w/ Dan Savage(!!!)
5:30-8pm: LITA Happy Hour
7:30-10pm: ALAplay 2011 (although I hear there’s a dance party somewhere?)
6/25
8-10am: Behavioral Issues in the Library: How Do We Respond?
10:30-noon: NMRT Executive Board Meeting (and if it ends early, I’ll pop into “The Discovery Payoff: Are discovery services increasing ROI and the library’s prominence in academic institutions” or “One Person Can Make a Difference: Tips and Techniques for the Lone Change Agent” or “MBA for Librarians Series – Leadership I”)
noon: Someone should meet me for lunch!
1:30-3:30pm: either “You Mean Libraries Will Be Able To Deliver Electronic Content Better Than iTunes and Netflix?” or “Download This! How One Library Embraced Its Downloadable Future”
3:30-4:30pm: go see Siva Vaidhyanathan, then leave early :/
4:00-5:30pm: New Leaders Discussion Group (LLAMA / NMRT); if that’s standing room only, I’ll do “Working Towards Transliteracy”
6-7:30pm: (maybe) Now Showing @ ALA: The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Paper (Film) … or maybe dinner
7-9pm: Newbie (and Veteran) Tweetup
9pm-??: ALA Facebook After Hours Social, assuming that’s open-invite
6/26
8-11am: SummonCamp (though I may have to leave early)
10:30-noon: “Context, Content, and Contraptions” or “It’s All About Them: Developing Information Services with User Experience Design”
12-1pm: Volunteering at the Resume Review Booth (as a greeter, not a resume reviewer)
1:30-3:30pm: NMRT Membership Meeting
3:30-5:30pm: ALA President’s Program featuring Sue Gardner
5:30-7:30pm: Pitt iSchool Alumni Reception (if anyone I know is going, at least)
7:30-10pm: Joint Merritt Fund / NMRT Awards Reception
(And I’m hoping there’s a fun vendor party that night?)
6/27
8-10am: either “Coffee and Conversation with Experts” or “Emerging Technologies Interest Group”
10:30-noon: maybe the Exhibit Hall, honestly; my schedule says “MBA for Librarians Series – Leadership II” or “The BIGWIG Showcase,” but as I type this, neither compels me
11:30-12:30: Jeff Jarvis (hmm)
1:30-3:30pm: Using Virtual Focus Groups in Distance Learning & Online Environments
3:30: late lunch?
5:30-7pm: Battledecks 2011
after: socialize? sleep?
6/28
8-10am: Professional Socialization and Trendspotting
9-10am: Closing General Session featuring Molly Shannon
noon: hie myself hither towards the airport
